THIRD BIENNIAL MEETING

3rd Biennial Meeting - Brachial Plexus Surgery Group of India Coimbatore, 20-22, February 2009.

This meeting was organized by the Department of Plastic, Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery of Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore. Dr. S. Raja Sabapathy was the Organising Chairman, Dr. Hari Venkatramani and Dr. Ravindra Bharathi were the Organsing Secretaries of the meeting.

110 delegates, from 11 countries participated in the meeting.

On the first day the conference was inaugurated by Prof. R. Venkataswami, Founder President of our society. The Presidential address was given by Padmashri Dr. Ashok K Gupta, and inaugural address by Prof. R. Venkataswami.

In the first session, basic science in relation to Brachial Plexus was discussed. In the second session, guest lecture on microsurgical reconstruction in Brachial Plexus birth palsy by Dr. Alex Muset and in adult palsy by Dr. Jorge Clifton.

This was followed by live surgery demonstration by the invited faculties. The surgeries were directly relayed on two screens in the auditorium.

The surgeries which were performed were as follows:

1. Early exploration of nerve transfer in Paediatric Birth Palsy

2. Secondary Procedure for improving shoulder function.

3. Nerve transfers in adult Brachial Plexus Palsy.

In the evening, the General Body meeting of the Brachial Plexus Surgery Group of India was held, at Ganga Hospital Auditorium. Dr. Anil Bhatia, Secretary, briefed about the activities of the society in the past two years and introduced the new members.

Dr. V. Purushothaman was elected as the next secretary and Dr. Mukund R. Thatte was unanimously elected as President of the society. The next meeting was to be held at Sparsh Hospital, Bangalore. The four new Executive Members were elected.

They were:

    4.Dr. Hari Venkatramani, Coimbatore
       

New guidelines for becoming a member were set.

Day- 2: 21-02-2009

The first session in the morning was on newer concepts in nerve reconstruction.

Dr. Jerker Brandt from Swedon presented on nerve graft substitute which was followed by Dr. Tan Ter Chyan who spoke on Biomimetric Nonofibrous constructs. This was followed by live operative session. The surgeries which were demonstrated were

1. Intercostal nerve transfer for restoration of elbow flexion

2. Intercostal nerve to Pectoralis major transfer.

3. Oberlin transfer for elbow flexion

In the afternoon session, symposium on secondary surgeries for birth palsies was held. The remaining events consisted of 10 free papers. On the final day, Clinical case demonstration with all the faculty was held. The over all feed back of the National and International delegates was very good. Many young surgeons showed keen interest in taking up this speciality in future.
